National Park & Rec Month Highlights Value of Local Parks and Recreation

2017 Adult Basketball League Championship Team: Best Western Bidarka Inn Riptide

Summer is here, which means it’s time to get out and play!

July is National Park & Recreation Month, a designation to help highlight the role of recreation in our community.  From providing us places to play, get fit and stay healthy to fostering new relationships and connecting with nature, the City of Homer parks and recreation facilities and Community Recreation programs provide essential services and improve quality of life.

Learn a new sport like fencing or pickleball, hike on a local trail, meet your friends and their kids at Karen Hornaday Park, or schedule your reunion activities at one of the City of Homer picnic pavilions.  City of Homer parks and recreation programs are the places where everyone can participate, regardless of age or ability.

While July is the recognition month, the City of Homer Community Recreation Program offers 90+ opportunities throughout the year for healthy fun, social interaction and physical activity.

The popular Adult Basketball League, held during the cold winter months is one example.  Regular season games are held from mid-October to the end of February at the Homer Middle School with playoffs and championship games at Homer High School.  The season is truly a collaborative effort.

Eight different teams (including one from as far away as Ninilchik) comprised of 105 players competed during the 2016-2017 season. In a typical night, 50-75 fans come out to cheer their favorite teams.  In support of this opportunity, each player pays a participation fee and each team secures a sponsor.  Team sponsorship allows businesses and individuals to contribute to the cost operations of the league, i.e. paying local referees, table workers/score keepers, awards and championship hoodies.  In return, the sponsor receive publicity through the games, local news standings, publicity articles and advertisement on league t-shirts.
