Potholes: Report and Avoid

Winter’s gift of snow and ice takes an unforgiving toll on our streets, making spring months a particularly bad time for potholes. Our warm spring-like weather lately is a welcome reprieve from winter’s cold and snow, but it also brings something much less welcome, an increase in the number of potholes, and with it, pothole accidents.
Roads of greatest concern right now are Kachemak Drive and East Hill and West Hill. These State DOT maintained roads are full of obstacles. However, a limited State maintenance crew and limited funding is making it challenging for them to patch the holes in a timely manner.
Slowing down and using caution to avoid potholes on these roads will help save you and your family a costly trip to the mechanic, or an unfortunate accident.
Homer’s Public Works crew does it’s best to fill holes on City roads as a priority and to assist DOT where they can, but the department does not have the materials and equipment for the extra miles of pothole repair. If you notice a hazardous pothole on local streets, please notify Public Works at 907- 235-3170 and they can direct services or your call appropriately. Or, contact Alaska DOT at the email address on the photo.
