Sister City 2026 Summer Cultural Events

In honor of our Sister City relationship with Teshio, Japan, we are pleased to share the 2026 Summer Cultural Event Schedule.  Hosted by the Alaska Japanese Club, the events are designed to celebrate and share Japanese culture throughout the summer. We encourage everyone to join and explore this wonderful lineup of cultural experiences.

Taiko drumming sessions. One-hour group sessions at Homer United Methodist Church on July 3 at 4 pm, July 10 at 2:30 pm, July 24 at 2 pm, and July 31 at 4 pm.

Kimchi making class. July 7 from noon to 2:30 pm at Homer United Methodist Church. $25 if you bring your own pint or quart wide-mouth jar, or $30 jar included. Please call (907) 308-1861 to register for this class as there is a 20 person maximum.[JE1] 

Taiko Drumming Workshop with special guest Mr. Furuta from Tokyo, a Japanese Taiko drumming master. July 21 at Bishop’s Beach from 3 to 6 pm.

Japanese Cultural Studies. July 11 & 18 at the Homer Public Library from 10 – 11:30 am.

Japanese Summer Festival featuring Taiko drumming, Japanese games, and food. Mr. Furuta will be a special guest at the festival. July 25 at Karen Hornaday Park from 3 to 7 pm.
