Placemaking at Homer Public Library

The Friends of Homer Library (FHL) is working on improvements to the 2.24-acre parcel of land just west of the library! The project has three broad aims:

1. Educate and inspire curiosity about the cultural and natural history of Homer and the library's service area, including the local environment, historical resources, and knowledge about Native culture and language.
2. Connect existing trails within the city, improve accessibility, and establish way-finding signage.
3. Conserve and provide access to the wetlands that exist on the land, highlighting the role of wetlands in the local ecosystem.

As of December 2025, all the following steps are complete:

• The trail has been regraded, widened and repaved
• A wraparound bench has been installed at one of the trees
• Story posts have been replaced with more durable hardware
• New signage has been added, exploring the botany and ethnography of the area, and some plants are also marked with specific signs
• A welcome kiosk has been installed at the western end of the trail
• Boulders have been selected for moving to the site
• Stump seating has been obtained but not installed
• A second bench, to go at the western end of the trail, has also been obtained but not installed
