SUBJECT:          TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION FOR MAYOR ZAK, TWO NEWLY ELECTED COUNCILMEMBERS, AND UP TO THREE COUNCILMEMBERS TO ATTEND THE ALASKA MUNICIPAL LEAGUE 67TH ANNUAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT CONFERENCE IN ANCHORAGE, ALASKA NOVEMBER 13-17, 2017

 

The Alaska Municipal League (AML) 67th Annual Local Government Conference is scheduled in Anchorage, Alaska, November 13-17, 2017.

 

The AML is a voluntary, nonprofit, nonpartisan, statewide organization of 140 cities, boroughs, and unified municipalities, representing over 97 percent of Alaska's residents. Originally organized in 1950, the League of Alaska Cities became the Alaska Municipal League in 1962 when boroughs joined the League.

 

Meetings include Newly Elected Officials (NEO), Alaska Conference of Mayors, board committees and meeting with Legislators.

 

Cost estimates for travel include round trip airfare from Homer to Anchorage at $250.00 and room rates at $111.00 per night. Per diem is $58.00 per day, for three meals.

 

For FY 2017 Council budgeted $6,000 for transportation and $4,000 for subsistence. To date $2,725.38 has been expended from Transportation Acct. No. 100.0100.5236, leaving a balance of $3274.32; and $1,152.82 has been expended from Subsistence Acct. No. 100.0100.5237, with a balance of $1,884.18 remaining.

 

Mayor Zak and Councilmember Stroozas would like to attend. Newly Elected Official have been advised of NEO training, and Councilmember Smith is considering attendance.

 

RECOMMENDATION:

Approve attendance for Mayor Zak at the Conference of Mayors and AML Annual Conference, two newly elected councilmembers at NEO training, and up to three councilmembers to attend the AML Conference.

 

An informational memo will be provided at the next meeting confirming who will attend.
