SUBJECT:          TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION FOR MAYOR, AND TWO COUNCILMEMBERS TO ATTEND THE ALASKA MUNICIPAL LEAGUE 68TH ANNUAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT CONFERENCE IN ANCHORAGE, ALASKA NOVEMBER 12-16, 2018

 

The Alaska Municipal League (AML) 68th Annual Local Government Conference is scheduled in Anchorage, Alaska, November 12-16, 2018.

The AML is a voluntary, nonprofit, nonpartisan, statewide organization of 140 cities, boroughs, and unified municipalities, representing over 97 percent of Alaska's residents. Originally organized in 1950, the League of Alaska Cities became the Alaska Municipal League in 1962 when boroughs joined the League.

Meetings include Newly Elected Officials (NEO), Alaska Conference of Mayors, board committees and meeting with Legislators.

Cost estimates for travel include round trip airfare from Homer to Anchorage at $250.00 and room rates at $117.50 per night. Per diem is $58.00 per day, for three meals. Conference registration for NEO and Annual Conference is $500, Conference only is $300.

For FY 2018 Council budgeted $6,000 for transportation, $4,000 for subsistence, and $1,700 for training. Transportation Acct. No. 100.0100.5236, has a balance of $2823.17; Subsistence Acct. No. 100.0100.5237, with a balance of $1,933.00; and Training Acct. No. 100.0100.5206 has a balance of 1275.00.

Councilmembers Stroozas and Venuti have expressed interest in attending the AML Conference. The newly elected Mayor has been advised of the Newly Elected Official training, Alaska Conference of Mayors meeting and the Annual Conference schedule.

RECOMMENDATION:

Approve attendance for Mayor and two Council Members at the AML Annual Conference.
