What To Take With You When You Evacuate

Be Prepared to "Grab & Go" During an Evacuation

In the event of an earthquake, tsunami or fire, you may have to quickly evacuate your home or workplace with little or no warning.  Make a "Grab & Go Bag" of essentials to grab on your way out.  A "Grab & Go Bag" is a packed case that will help keep you safe and comfortable in the coming hours and days.

Make A Family Communication Plan

Don’t lose touch with your family during a disaster!  Make a family communication plan this weekend.

Emergencies can happen at any time. You will want to send and receive information from your family and friends.

“What if something happens and I’m not with my family?” “How will I know they are safe?” “How can I let them know I’m OK?”

Know Homer's Evacuation Routes and Safe Zones

Many of us live, work, shop or play in Homer's tsunami danger zone.  Tsunamis don't happen often, but when they do,  knowing Homer's tsunami inundations zones and where to go during a tsunami evacuation ahead of time is crucial to your survival--you may only have minutes to get to safety.

How Long Do You Have to Evacuate Before a Tsunami?

Most tsunamis are triggered when earthquakes near the seafloor displace a large amount of water. That water gets pushed out as a series of waves that move outwards in all directions.

If a major earthquake originates far off shore, you may have a couple of hours to get to safety.  Out on the sea, the tsunami waves can be hundreds of miles long but no taller than a few feet and travel at the speed of a jet plane, up to 500 miles per hour. When the waves approach land, they will slow down and begin to grow in height.
