Bridge Creek Reservoir Groundwater Study

The University of South Florida Ecohydrology Research Group (USF ERG) and the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (KBNERR) have been investigating groundwater dynamics in the Lower Kenai Peninsula for over two decades.

In 2022, the City of Homer contracted with USF ERG and KBNERR to conduct a focused investigation on the groundwater dynamics in the Bridge Creek Reservoir (BCR) which supplies water for city residents and serves as the headwaters for the South Fork Anchor River.

Youth Voucher Program

The Community Recreation Youth Voucher Program was established through the Homer Foundation's Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) who generously donated funds to ensure affordability and accessibility for local youth in the Homer area. On a first come, first serve basis, any youth may apply to receive up to a $100 voucher towards any Community Recreation program to help pay for instructor fees, punch cards or memberships.  Application is required.

Movie Passes - NEW at the library

Homer Public Library is partnering with The Porcupine Theater to offer FREE MOVIE PASSES.

Each week the library will have a limited number of free movie passes available for library card holders. Available first-come, first-served each Saturday morning at 10am at the library! Passes are valid from day of issue through the following Friday night. Limit 1 pass per library card per week.

 

Decommissioning Ceremony Marks End of USCG Naushon's Distinguished Service

Friday, March 21, 2025 was the decommissioning ceremony for the Homer-stationed USCG Cutter Naushon.

Rear Admiral Megan Dean, the commander of Coast Guard District 17, presided over the ceremony honoring the nearly 40 years of service Naushon and its crews provided.

First commissioned on October 3, 1986, the Naushon has proudly served in the Coast Guard's Alaska maritime homeland security operations for nearly four decades and has been home-ported in Homer since June 2016.

Library CLOSED for Seward's Day 2025

The Homer Public Library will be CLOSED for Seward's Day, Monday, March 31st. Regular Hours resume Tuesday, April 1st.

Volcano Preparedness

There are four monitored volcanoes in the Kenai Peninsula Borough: Spurr, Redoubt, Iliamna and Augustine. Their activity is monitored by the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), a joint program of the U.S. Geological Survey, the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys.

Alaska Reads Author Talk with Lily Tuzroyluke

Indigenous author Lily Tuzroyluke has been selected for the 2024-2026 Alaska Reads program, which brings Alaskans together through shared reading experiences. Her historical novel Sivulliq: Ancestor is set in 1890s Alaska, amid harrowing change for the Inupiaq people. As the Alaska Reads author, Tuzroyluke will visit libraries and communities across the state through 2026. Join us at the Homer Public Library for a reading and discussion!
