Community Rec Helps Kick the Winter Blues

When winter deepens and the ‘winter blues’ start to set in, finding a way to cope can be difficult.

According to a recent Park Pulse poll conducted by the National Recreation and Park Association, more and more Americans are turning to their local Community Recreation programs and facilities to stave off the winter blues. Among the 80 percent of Americans that plan to do something to cope with the winter blues this season:

  • 44% plan to surround themselves with family and friends, such as at a local park or rec center
  • 32% plan to stay active by exercising indoors, such as at a gym, local rec center or through indoor sports
  • 25% plan to go outdoors for leisure or to stay active, such as at a local park or trail
  • 16% plan to pick up a new hobby or take a class, such as at a local rec center.

The benefits of parks go beyond promoting good physical health.  By nurturing connections to nature and green space and strengthening community and interpersonal relationships, parks and recreation provide mental health benefits as well.  So check out Homer Community Recreation's activity schedule to help kick the winter blues-- there's likely an offering to fit your interests and schedule!

One way to get started is Tabletop Gaming Night where friends, families, and gamers can bring in their own tabletop games and play together!  Community Rec will provide tables in the Homer High School Commons Area from 2 pm to 6 pm every other Sunday starting January 21, 2018.  A great opportunity to make new friends and see new games!
