Homer Wishes the Coast Guard Happy 234th Birthday!

This month, on August 4th, we celebrate the brave men and women of the United States Coast Guard as they mark 234 years of service.

The USCG was established in 1790 by the Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton and tasked with collecting customs duties in the nation’s seaports. In the two centuries since then, the Coast Guard has evolved into a multifaceted force essential to our national security, maritime safety, and environmental protection.

Whether responding to natural disasters, promoting marine safety through courtesy vessel inspections and awareness events, whether rescuing mariners in distress, or safeguarding our marine environment, Coast Guard personnel have consistently demonstrated unwavering courage and dedication. District 17’s efforts to ensure the safety and security of Alaska’s waters and those who travel upon them makes a world of difference in our coastal communities.

We thank and wish all the individuals who have served and who are currently serving and their families a Happy USCG Birthday. Of course we send a special shout out to our Homer-based crews on the USCGC Naushon and USCGC Aspen, as well as the Marine Safety Detachment-Homer and Flotilla 2-1 of the USCG Auxiliay. We invite the community to join us in honoring our local Coast Guard units. Take a moment this month to thank Coast Guard personnel, Auxiliary members and their families. A simple wave, a kind word, or a small gesture goes a long way in showing our immense gratitude.

The City of Homer is honored to be an official ‘Coast Guard City’ and celebrates the positive relationship the Homer community and the USCG have shared for more than 50 years.  Homer is one of 34 cities nationwide and one of 7 participating cities in Alaska.
