Lake Street Water Main Break Fixed

Three Homer Public Works Department personnel work in a deep waterlogged hole near Lake street to fix a broken water main pipe.

Yesterday, City of Homer Public Works equipment operators and Water/Sewer operators responded to a water main break on Lake Street in Homer.  The break was first reported to Public Works at 1:30 pm by a citizen who noticed water coming out of the ground across the street from Ulmer’s.  A line monitoring check confirmed the break, showing water flowing at 350 gallons per minute.

Public Works immediately began to mobilize crews and equipment for repairs while utility companies performed emergency locates for buried utilities at the site.  The crew successfully redirected water in the system to minimize water loss and continue serving customers in the area.  Two customers had little to no pressure during the six-hour repair time.

Traffic moves in one lane on Lake Street in Homer Alaska around workers fixing a broken water main pipe.

We extend our thanks to Homer water customers for their understanding and also extend our appreciation to drivers for being cautious in the construction zone during the six-hour repair, two-hour backfill and cleanup of the repair site.

In a statement, Homer Water/Sewer Superintendent Todd Cook credited the minimal downtime to the efficiency of Public Works staff.  “Their knowledge, ability and teamwork allowed us to make this repair in an efficient manner, minimizing the negative impacts it could have had on our customers.  I also want to thank the other utilities for responding so quickly to our emergency utility locate request.”

The City is happy to report that inspection of the water main shows the rest of the pipe to be in good condition.
