Homer Beach Policy

We often get asked "where can I ride?"

                                                 ATTENTION CITY BEACH USERS

The final beach policy defining where people may drive on local beaches passed at the February 22nd Homer City Council meeting and went into effect February 23rd, 2016.

Ordinance 16-05(S-2)(A-2) prohibits driving or parking on all City beaches and storm berms with the following exceptions:

  • People may drive to the west, or right, of the parking lot area on Bishops Beach;
  • People may drive on the beach from Mariner Park to the west up to the east end of the seawall for the purposes of gathering sand or coal from October 31st to March 1st.

ALL OTHER BEACHES WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS OF HOMER ARE NOW CLOSED TO VEHICLE USE OF ANY KIND.

  • no driving on the berm in front of Beluga Slough east of the Bishops Beach parking lot;
  • no driving on the Homer Spit unless it is the coal picking area west of Mariner Park during the permitted months;
  • no vehicular beach access via the old Airport Beach Access Road off of Kachemak Drive;
  • while driving is permitted east of the old airport access area, there is no public access in City Limits.

Drivers are reminded to respect private property located on many of our beach areas.

Beach front property owners may obtain a permit from the Homer Police Department to perform maintenance on their property.  Permits will be available beginning on April 1st, 2016.

Thanks for abiding by these new regulations for the long-term health of Homer's beautiful beaches!

Our beaches are beautiful works of nature and we welcome your presence on them.  Some areas of our beaches are environmentally sensitive.  When driving on our beaches, please maintain a safe and respectful distance away from all pedestrians.  Watch out for soft sand and fast moving tidal waters.

Tampering with, removing or burning any driftwood located on a storm berm and driving on any storm berm or in the mud flats of: Mud Bay, Louie's Lagoon, Mariner Park Lagoon and the Beluga Slough is prohibited.
