RESOLUTION 18-073

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF HOMER, ALASKA, APPROVING AND ACCEPTING THE DONATION OF TUGGEHT JANJU TETS (HOMER MEDICINE STICK) BY ARGENT KVASNIKOFF, NINILCHIK, ALASKA, FOR THE MUNICIPAL ART COLLECTION TO BE PLACED AT THE HOMER PUBLIC LIBRARY.

WHEREAS, The sculpture entitled Tuggeht Janju Tets was created for an exhibit at the Pratt Museum and represents local cultures from ancient to modern and the role of language, voice and light; and

WHEREAS, This piece features a blessing using a written alphabet that the artist has designed and created to encourage the learning of pre-contact Dena’ina culture and language by using a system of letters that each have a corresponding symbolism from a spectrum of cultural ideas and locations within the language’s entire Cook inlet basin origin; and

WHEREAS, Argent Kvasnikoff is a local artist, a member of the lower peninsula’s Ninilchik Tribe and has ancestry that includes indigenous Dena’ina lineage of the peninsula and Kachemak Bay; and

WHEREAS, The Library Advisory Board (LAB) and the Parks, Art, Recreation, and Culture Commission (PARCAC) have reviewed the donation to the City of Homer and recommended that City Council approve and accept the Homer Medicine Stick for the Municipal Art Collection.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of Homer, Alaska, hereby approves and accepts the donation of Tuggeht Janju Tets’ (Homer Medicine Stick) by Argent Kvasnikoff for the Municipal Art Collection to be placed in the Homer Public Library.
