Ongoing and Future Projects

The City of Homer is focused on continuing projects that give serious consideration to climate change and sustainability in our community.

City energy use records continue to be updated in order to quantify greenhouse gas emissions.  The city plans to continue its partnership with the organization, Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), as well as local school groups to develop a community wide greenhouse gas inventory in the near future.  This data will then be used for sustainability messaging and advocacy within the community.  Click on this link to learn more about ICLEI: https://iclei.org/

The City of Homer is working on four green stormwater management projects.  Historically stormwater has been managed through a combination of open ditches and subsurface storm drains.  These systems convey water to several dedicated outfalls, all of which ultimately flow into Kachemak Bay.  As the city grows and annual precipitation increases, flooding, water quality, and bluff erosion are concerns of increasing importance. Therefore, the city plans to integrate green infrastructure systems into its existing stormwater management strategies.  An important component of this goal is to utilize as much of Homer’s remaining wetland areas as possible for their natural water treatment and storage amenities.  Additionally, the City is working with an engineering firm to develop drainage districts to assist with quantifying runoff volumes in particular areas for the purpose of informing management decisions.
