Homer, Alaska, June 22, 2023 -- The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is introducing the Alaska Project Exchange (APEX) – a public resource for staying connected and involved with the DOT&PF construction projects that matter to you. Here's what you need to know:

  • Traffic Information: Stay up to date with real-time updates on road traffic impacts caused by construction projects through the Alaska 511 system. Whether you prefer accessing it via 511.alaska.gov, the 511 Alaska mobile app, or by simply calling 5-1-1, you can now plan your travels with ease. The Alaska Navigator program and website have been retired.
  • Detailed Project Information: Are you looking for more than traffic updates? Dive deeper into each construction project at dot.alaska.gov/construction. There you will find project scopes, timelines, contact information, maps, and links to more information when available.
  • Your Voice Matters: The DOT&PF accepts questions and feedback regarding their construction program.

Homer Airport Improvements Project

The State of Alaska DOT&PF has announced the Homer Airport Improvements project. This project aims to enhance the airport's infrastructure, ensuring a safer and more efficient travel experience for all. Here are the key details:

Project Scope: A DOT&PF press statement explains this project is necessary to improve the condition of the airfield pavements, runway/taxiway lighting, and drainage structures at the Homer Airport. The runway and taxiway widths will be updated to current standards.

This project will rehabilitate the runway and runway safety area; remove terrain obstructing the runway object-free area; rehabilitate Taxiways A, B, and a portion of D; remove a portion of Taxiway 0 and convert it to an airfield service road; construct a new turnaround taxiway (Taxiway G) near the Runway 22 threshold; rehabilitate and expand the General Aviation apron; construct drainage improvements including replacement of culverts crossing the runway and taxiways; remove existing Visual Approach Slope Indicator System (VASIs) and replace with Precision Approach Path Indicator system (PAPIs); replace runway and taxiway lighting and signage systems. 

Project Timeline: The project began in May 2023 and is expected to conclude by October 2024.
