City Brush Cutting Notice

July 15, 2025

Public Works will be cutting brush in road right-of-ways citywide as needed to maintain drainage in the ditches and to maintain clear lines of sight. 

Work locations on Main Street, Bartlett Street, Hidden Way, Mattox Road and Kachemak Way are being prioritized based on areas with the highest weed and shrub growth and public reports of obstructed visibility.

EPA Service Line Survey

In accordance with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, the City of Homer Water and Sewer Department completed the required Service Line Inventory in 2024. After reviewing historical service line information, it was determined that there is no lead or galvanized lines requiring replacement and no unknown service lines in the City of Homer water distribution system.

HERC Multipurpose Room Temporarily Closed

The Multipurpose Room at the HERC is temporarily closed. The gymnasium at the HERC is still open for use.

The City of Homer (City) has been working with the Alaska Department of Conservation (ADEC) on characterizing the potential hazardous materials within the Homer Education and Recreation Complex (HERC) in order to determine the potential environmental reclamation that may be required in advance of future demolition.

Burn Permit Suspension In Effect

The Division of Forestry & Fire Prevention issued a Burn Permit Suspension for the Kenai-Kodiak, Mat-Su and Copper Rivers Areas effective at 9:00 am on Saturday June 21st. This is due to increased wildfire activity in the State and the relocation of firefighting resources to Interior Alaska.

A burn permit suspension means no burning of burn barrels, debris piles, or lawn burns on state, municipal and private lands. The suspension applies to permits issued by the division, as well as those issued by boroughs or municipalities.

The Alaska Glacier Dictionary - Author Talk with Naomi Klouda

The author of the newly released The Alaska Glacier Dictionary, and Homer local, Naomi Klouda will share a slideshow presentation called Every Glacier is Different. The presentation will include discussion about the importance of Alaska's glacier details, both in history and in future ramifications. The Alaska Glacier Dictionary contains about 700 named glaciers, a collection of glacier essays and a section of answers for frequently asked questions. Klouda will give specific mention of the glaciers of Kachemak Bay.
