There’s a lot happening in the City of Homer!  Join a City advisory body and help shape our future. These Boards and Commissions are advisors to the City Manager and City Council on specific matters like the Port & Harbor, Parks, Art, and Recreation, ADA and Accessibility, the Library, Economic Development, and City Planning. To learn more about the different Boards and Commissions, click here or contact the City Clerk’s office at 907-235-3130 or clerk@ci.homer.ak.us.

We are always accepting applications even if there are no seats currently open-- we can keep your application on file and contact you if something opens up. The best time to apply is January or February, since terms expire on March 31st and seats often become available when Commissioners or Board Members choose not to renew their term. 

To apply, fill out this online form or you can print or email the PDF version of the application. All applications are considered for appointment by the Mayor and then approved by City Council.

I live outside City limits, how do I know if I can join a board or commission?

All boards and commissions have at least one non-resident seat. Take a look at the webpage for the advisory body you are interested in to see if any of the members have (NR) listed next to their name. If the board already has reached their limit of non-resident members, we can still take an application from you and contact you when a non-resident seat becomes available.

I want to join an advisory body, but how do I know if I'll have time?

Advisory Bodies meet once or twice a month, and meetings can be an hour long or they can go for three hours or more, depending on how many items are on the agenda and how much public comment is received.

To figure out which advisory body would work for your schedule, here are the meeting days and times for each one. Some bodies do not meet in the summer or during the holiday months, for the exact meetings schedules contact the Clerk's Office.

Economic Development Advisory Commission Second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.
Library Advisory Board Third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
Planning Commission First and Third Wednesday of each month. Worksession at 5:30, regular meeting at 6:30
Port & Harbor Advisory Commission Fourth Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture Advisory Board Third Thursday of each month at 4:30 p.m.
ADA Advisory Board Second Thursday of each month at 4:30 p.m.

I'm not always in town, can I still join a Board or Commission?

Yes, absolutely! We have options to attend meetings remotely via zoom, and it's okay to miss a few meetings each year if you are out fishing or in an area without a good internet connection.
