Candidate Statement:
My Name is John Mink and I am a candidate for Homer City Council. Upon moving here permanently more than a decade ago, I have demonstrated a deep commitment to our community and a proven track record of leadership. I am eager to continue to serve the community and contribute to the continued growth and prosperity of our town.
My spirit is one of innovation and business mindfulness. This is evident through my work as the inventor/founder of the Ski Vaan company, creating innovative tools for the cross-country ski industry, hiring lcoal talent to help create and market my products. I have professional and executive experience in sales, finance, consulting, and engineering across various industries including solar energy, accounting software, oil and gas exploration, semiconductor, real estate, and geotechnical engineering. This diverse background has equipped me with the skills to address complex challenges, foster collaboration, and deliver results that benefit our community.
Beyond my professional endeavors, I have been deeply engaged in Homer’s civic life. I have served as President of the Homer Hockey Association for two years, an Assistant Coach for Homer Middle School’s cross-country ski team, and a youth coach for the Kachemak Jr. Nordic Ski Association. I also served as an Economic Development Commissioner for the City of Homer, and as a Big Brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska. I currently serve as a member of the Board of Directors for the Non-profit Homer Elks, where I’ve been honored as Elk Officer of the Year twice, a substitute teacher in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District for the fourth year, and a technical coach for a local Jr. National level XC skier.
You might have even heard my name from playing saxophone in the KP Brass Band and Ellie and the Echos (voted “best band” on the Peninsula this by the Peninsula Clarion), as the “Let’s Keep them Open, Homer” reviewer on Facebook – Homer Communications, and this year’s “Mr. Homer” winner from the Winter Carnival!
My vision for Homer is one of sustainable growth, economic vitality, and long-term community viability through youth engagement and education. I am committed to listening to your concerns, fostering transparent dialogue, and working collaboratively to address our shared priorities. Thank you for your trust and support. I respectfully ask for your vote to serve our community.
