Three City Council Members Begin New Terms After Swearing-In Ceremony

Three City Council members officially began new terms at last night's City Council meeting after the certification of October 7 municipal election results confirmed their successful re-election bids.

Jason Davis, Storm Hansen and Bradley Parsons took the oath of office during the October 13th meeting, marking the continuation of their service to the community. Council members Davis and Hansen will each serve for three-year terms and Council member Parsons will serve for another one-year term.

City Offices Closed Oct 17 for Alaska Day

 

City offices will be closed on Friday, October 17th in observance of Alaska Day.

Alaska Day is celebrated on October 18th each year and marks the anniversary of the formal transfer of the Territory of Alaska from Russia to the United States in 1867. The formal flag-raising and transfer occurred in Sitka. Alaska’s territorial legislature declared Alaska Day a state holiday in 1917.

Appreciation for our 2025 Poll Workers

While election outcomes often capture the headlines, we wanted to take a moment to recognize and thank our behind-the-scenes election heroes: our poll workers and city clerks. They put in long hours to make sure every voter in our community can participate. From managing accessible voting locations to helping voters check in and ensuring ballots are properly cast, these dedicated individuals safeguard the fundamental elements of our democratic process.

2026-2031 CIP

The Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) provides information on capital projects identified as priorities for the Homer community.  Projects to be undertaken by the State of Alaska and other non-City organizations are included in the CIP in separate sections. An overview of the financial assumptions can be found in the Appendix.

PSP Alert for Kachemak Bay

The Alaska Division of Public Health issued a PSP Alert for Kachemak Bay. During the first week of September, shellfish from inner Kachemak Bay have been found to contain toxins above the regulatory limit that is considered safe for human consumption.

Alaskans Asked to Share Their Transportation Stories

Temporary Closure of HERC Multipurpose Room

The City of Homer (City) has been working with the Alaska Department of Conservation (ADEC) on characterizing the potential hazardous materials within the Homer Education and Recreation Complex (HERC) in order to determine the potential environmental reclamation that may be required in advance of future demolition.

Decommissioning Ceremony Marks End of USCG Naushon's Distinguished Service

Friday, March 21, 2025 was the decommissioning ceremony for the Homer-stationed USCG Cutter Naushon.

Rear Admiral Megan Dean, the commander of Coast Guard District 17, presided over the ceremony honoring the nearly 40 years of service Naushon and its crews provided.

First commissioned on October 3, 1986, the Naushon has proudly served in the Coast Guard's Alaska maritime homeland security operations for nearly four decades and has been home-ported in Homer since June 2016.

Saying Goodbye to An Old Friend: USCG Cutter Naushon Decommissioning

First commissioned on October 3, 1986, the U.S. Coast Guard cutter NAUSHON has been part of the Coast Guard's presence in Homer since June 2016. The NAUSHON is an Island-class patrol boat, a class of cutters of the United States Coast Guard named after Islands. (For the curious, Naushon Island is the largest of the Elizabeth Islands in southeastern Massachusetts near Cape Cod.)
