Boating to China Poot Bay? Beware of Dangerous Tide Rips
China Poot Bay, a popular salmon fishing spot on the south side of Kachemak Bay, will be open to dipnetters and snagging starting July 1.
If you are heading over, be aware, that the entrance to the bay can be dangerous in high winds. The combination of strong outgoing tide currents and southwest winds creates standing waves. This tide rip has capsized boats causing injury and fatalities.
BE PREPARED - Familiarize yourself with nautical charts for the area. For charts, go to www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/16645.shtml
BE AWARE - Check the current tide and wind conditions. Any time the wind is blowing southwest, approach with care.
BE SAFE - Make sure ALL boaters have life jackets and safety equipment.
