On the Move: Endeavour Scheduled to leave Port Graham in November

According to operator Spartan Offshore Drilling, the mobile off shore drilling unit rig Endeavour Spirit of Independence will leave Port Graham the week of November 17th. The heavy lift ship that will transport the rig, Zen Hua 15, is on anchor in upper Kachemak Bay.  Before loading the rig, the Zen Hua 15 will ballast the ship down until the loading deck is approximately 20 feet under water. Three tractor tugs will then maneuver the rig over top of the Zen Hua’s deck until it comes to rest on pre-set posts. The ship will be raised back up slowly by pumping water out.

Current plans call for tugs towing the Endeavour out of Port Graham into upper Kachemak Bay Sunday the 16th of November. If everything goes as planned and the weather cooperates, loading will begin first thing the following Monday and the rig should be loaded onto the Zen Hua 15 by dark. It will take up to 24 hours for the ship’s crew to secure the rig for sea travel. Her destination is South Africa.

Though the City of Homer does not have jurisdiction over the vessels as the loading will occur in State waters, the Port and Harbor Director has been assured from both the rig mover and the rig owner that they will take every precaution when it comes to the move.
