Beware the China Poot Tide Rip!

A large standing wave in an otherwise calm sea with mountains and a blue sky in the background.

Summer has arrived and the China Poot personal use salmon fishery is open on the south side of Kachemak Bay. Dipnetters heading to the creek and sport fisherman hoping to snag a sockeye in the saltwater of China Poot Bay often travel by small boat from the Homer Spit to the fishing grounds.

If you are heading over, be aware that the entrance to China Poot Bay can be extremely dangerous in high winds. The combination of strong outgoing tide currents and southwest winds creates standing waves. This tide rip has capsized boats causing injury and fatalities.            A nautical chart of China Poot Bay
